Colton School Renovations & Addition

Renovation of and expansion to a historic school damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Waggonner & Ball converted the 140,000 square foot,
former Colton High School in a historic neighborhood
into a new pre-K through eighth grade public school
for the State of Louisiana Department of Education’s
Recovery School District. Ongoing structural deterioration to the exterior shell of the building, worsened by Hurricane Katrina, required an entirely new masonry enclosure and new windows.

The historic three story concrete frame and masonry infill structure has a new 25,000 square foot addition on its south exposure. In addition to classrooms and teaching spaces, the structure houses administrative offices, a new cafeteria, library, and gymnasium. The original character of the historic architecture is complemented by open spaces, durable and low maintenance materials and finishes, and abundant natural light and views out to the neighborhood.
