PARK(ing) Day

Waggonner & Ball installed “The Garden of Sub-Earthly Delights” for PARK(ing) Day in downtown New Orleans. We focused on a critical but oft-abused and misunderstood piece of shared infrastructure in the urban streetscape: the catch basin. There are 68,092 catch basins in New Orleans, and they are not loved equally. These hard-working pieces of drainage infrastructure take a lot of abuse: trash, leaves, soil from construction sites, and Mardi Gras beads can clog catch basins and cause localized street flooding. We displayed items found in catch basins in our neighborhood like precious artifacts on pedestals made of old terra cotta drain pipes.
